My name is Justin McKenna. On June 19, 2007, I was involved in an accident that changed my life, forever. I am one of thousands of Canadians each year whose life has been impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI) – an invisible epidemic. TBI is a form of acquired brain injury, which occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. Recovery and rehabilitation have been difficult, at times frustrating. However, the support I receive from family, friends and my amazing community encourages me to move forward every day.
On October 23rd, 2010 I hosted my first annual Brain Matters fundraising event. It was a lot of fun and a huge success; we raised a little over $20,000.00! The evening allowed me to explain what it’s like living with a brain injury and share my recovery story. I was also able to publically thank the people who’ve helped me on my journey.
Dealing with the consequences of TBI is a lifelong process requiring a range of treatment and rehabilitation resulting in enormous costs. For example, I have physiotherapy five times a week and require the intensive ongoing assistance of a rehabilitation aide to provide support daily. I’m proud to say I’m taking a course in Natural History of Ontario at Carleton University twice a week. While there, I need the assistance of an attendant and the support of a learning strategist. My transportation costs are also very high. Money raised at the Brain Matters events helps me offset those costs. I have also purchased a Saebo Splint to increase the function in my left arm and hand and will be buying an ergometer in the near future.
Thanking you in advance for your support,
